What Is the CQI-9 Heat Treat System Assessment?

CQI-9 is an assessment standard developed by AIAG for heat treatment processes in the automotive industry. It helps companies systematically evaluate requirements relating to process control, equipment, inspections, documentation, and responsibilities.

The assessment focuses on the reliable control of heat treatment processes, defect prevention, and the continuous improvement of process quality.

CQI-9 complements existing quality management systems such as IATF 16949. The specific obligation to apply CQI-9 generally results from OEM customer-specific requirements, quality agreements, or contractual obligations within the supply chain.

Who Is CQI-9 Relevant For?

CQI-9 is particularly relevant to companies that perform, commission, or assess heat treatment processes for the automotive industry.

Typical target groups include:

  • companies with their own heat treatment processes,
  • external heat treatment providers and heat treatment facilities,
  • automotive suppliers with heat-treated products,
  • OEMs, Tier 1, Tier 2, and other suppliers,
  • quality management and supplier management,
  • employees working in production, process development, and quality assurance,
  • internal auditors and supplier auditors,
  • companies that outsource heat treatment processes to subcontractors.

Companies without their own heat treatment facilities should also determine whether CQI-9 is required by their customers or within their supply chains.

How Often Must a CQI-9 Assessment Be Conducted?

If CQI-9 applies due to customer-specific requirements or contractual agreements, the Self-Assessment is generally conducted at least once a year.

Additional assessments may be required, for example:

  • when required by customer-specific requirements,
  • following significant process or equipment changes,
  • when heat treatment processes are relocated,
  • for new products or new heat treatment processes,
  • following significant quality deviations,
  • as part of supplier approval or supplier development.

The current CQI-9 edition, applicable customer-specific requirements, and contractual agreements must always be taken into account.

Structure of the CQI-9 Assessment

The CQI-9 Heat Treat System Assessment consists of overarching system requirements, a Job Audit, and process-specific Process Tables.

Cover Sheet and Basic Information

The first section documents essential information about the company and the assessment:

  • basic information about the heat treatment organisation,
  • assessed areas and applicable Process Tables,
  • information about auditors and participants,
  • results of the CQI-9 assessment.

System Requirements

The system requirements cover areas including:

  • management responsibility and quality planning,
  • responsibilities and qualifications,
  • material flow and material handling,
  • heat treatment equipment and facilities,
  • inspection, measurement, and monitoring processes,
  • maintenance, calibration, and process monitoring,
  • documentation and responses to deviations.

Job Audit

The Job Audit evaluates the practical implementation of the requirements using a specific product or production order.

The assessment covers areas including:

  • product and order data,
  • process sequence and process parameters,
  • customer-specific product requirements,
  • inspections and approvals,
  • employee responsibilities,
  • packaging and shipping.

Process Tables of the CQI-9 4th Edition

The applicable Process Tables must be included in the assessment depending on the heat treatment processes used.

Process Table A – Carburising and Other Hardening Processes

  • carburising,
  • carbonitriding,
  • carbon restoration or re-carburising,
  • neutral hardening,
  • austempering,
